Mangalore, May 7: Gold jewellery and cash worth Rs 5 lac was stolen from a family of three while they were returning by Konkan Railway train to Mangalore from Thane.
The family of Albert Gomes, Joyce Gomes and Karen Gomes, from Attavar here, lost their valuables consisting of jewellery worth more than Rs 4 lac and cash amounting to Rs 27,000 along with their return tickets.
The incident took place on Friday May 4, but the complaints at the Konkan railway police and Attavar police were registered on Monday May 7.
According to the complaint, when the train had reached Suratkal on Friday evening, the family got ready to alight at Mangalore station and stood near the doorway with their luggage.
At that moment, four strangers came where they stood and picked up a fight with the family for standing near the door. The complaint alleges that the fight was a trick by the foursome to divert their attention while one of the four stealthily stole the jewellery and cash from a maroon trolley bag belonging to the family.
The thieves left the bag but got away with the ornaments. The theft came to light only after they alighted from the train in the city.
In the complaint, it is also alleged that there was no security and even the ticket collector had not come to the family.
Incidentally, another person, Uday Shetty from Mangaladevi went through a similar experience the next day on a train. He was returning to Mangalore from Mumbai when gold and cash worth Rs 3 lac was stolen from him in a similar manner. He too has registered a complaint with the railway police.
