It is said that they were planning to target a jewellery store in Koppa and steal valuables. Their modus operandi and the exact target are not yet known.
Kammaradi Haneef is an accused in the murder of Hosalli Venkatesh Kivara. In 2003, he and his brother Abubakker were arrested in the case and sentenced to ife.
Recently, Haneef requested the jail authorities to let him free on parole. His request letter was forwarded to Agumbe police, who rejected his plea. It is said that Haneef then escaped from the prison with the help of some policemen.
On April 20, Prakash of Kuduregundi approached Manjunath Jewellers in Koppa and sold gold coins worth Rs 2 lac. Next day, along with Prakash, Haneef and others went to the same jeweller, Krishnanand, and told him that were policemen and had learnt that the gold coins sold by Prakash the previous day were stolen. Haneef, acting as a police chief asked the jeweller to surrender the gold coins into their custody.
However, the Krishnanand grew suspicious of their intention and said that the coins will be returned only when the money given in exchange is also returned to him. He also told them to meet him in the police station to settle the matter. Also, someone at the store also recognized Haneef and his gang. Growing alert and anxious at this, the gang said that they would return with the money and vanished.
