Manchester, Apr 18: In a dramatic clash that echoed the club's historic 1999 Champions League triumph, Manchester United pulled off a stunning comeback against Lyon to secure a place in the Europa League semi-finals, edging the French side 7-6 on aggregate after a 5-4 win at Old Trafford in extra time.
United manager Ruben Amorim revealed that the legendary 1999 final win over Bayern Munich served as the source of inspiration ahead of the pulsating quarter-final second leg. “I was watching the ’99 documentary again to get inspired for this moment. The team was tired, we were down 4-2 and had one more player, but here, it’s never over,” he told TNT Sports.
The thrilling encounter – the first nine-goal game in Europa League history – saw United squander a two-goal lead before Lyon, reduced to ten men, turned the tie around to lead 3-2. However, Kobbie Mainoo and Harry Maguire struck late in extra time to seal an unforgettable night for the Red Devils.
“We tried putting Maguire up because he’s the only guy who can score headers. Kobbie doesn’t have full pace due to his injury layoff, but he’s smart in tight spaces – and he showed that with his goal,” Amorim said.
Looking ahead to their semi-final clash against Spain’s Athletic Club, Amorim remained grounded yet optimistic. “Anything is possible – we showed that tonight. We may not always play perfect football, but we have character. This win gives us confidence and a clear goal for the games ahead.”
