Jerusalem, Apr 17: In a poignant turn of events that has stirred emotions across Israel, a beloved pet dog named Billie has been reunited with her family nearly 18 months after vanishing during the devastating Hamas attack on Kibbutz Nir Oz in southern Israel.

The heart-touching reunion, hailed by many as a rare beacon of hope amid prolonged grief, came after an Israeli soldier found the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel wandering in the rubble of Rafah in Gaza. The soldier, speaking Hebrew, was stunned when the dog immediately responded and leapt into his arms.

Rachel Dancyg, the pet’s owner, was left in disbelief when her daughter received the call confirming Billie’s rescue. “It’s a miracle,” she told the Associated Press. “It doesn’t make sense... people didn’t survive. How did she?”

Billie had disappeared during the October 7, 2023 attack — a day that left over 1,200 Israelis dead and more than 250 kidnapped. Among the victims were Rachel’s ex-husband and brother, whose bodies were later returned in separate instances. The family, forced to flee their home under fire, had left behind their cherished pet in the confusion and horror.

Despite exhaustive efforts by the community to trace Billie, no clues emerged — until the soldier, identified as Aviad Shapira, discovered her. Sensing the dog was not a local, he took her to a vet who scanned her microchip, revealing her Israeli origins.

Speaking to the media, Rachel said Billie had lost weight and appeared disoriented but was otherwise healthy. “She’s home — and that brings us some peace,” she shared while holding Billie close.

While Israeli media widely reported the reunion with warmth, the Nir Oz community reminded the public of the deep scars left behind. In a message on social media, they described Billie’s return as “a little light in a lot of sorrow.”

Though the family has found solace in this reunion, Rachel said the trauma lingers. “Until every hostage comes back, there is no real closure,” she said, echoing the sentiments of many still awaiting news of their loved ones.

Billie’s miraculous journey back home is now being seen as a symbol of endurance and the silent hope carried by survivors amidst the ongoing conflict.
