Panaji, Apr 17: In a significant move to tackle the dual challenges of climate change and rising urban temperatures, the Goa Forest Department, in partnership with the Department of Urban Development, has unveiled an ambitious Urban Forestry initiative aimed at transforming municipal spaces into vibrant green zones.
Forest Minister Vishwajit Rane, while announcing the initiative, underscored its long-term goal to create "green lungs" within cityscapes across the state. These green pockets are envisioned to improve air quality, foster biodiversity, and provide citizens with cooler, healthier public spaces.
“This green mission is about reshaping urban spaces to ensure a healthier future. By integrating forests into city planning, we’re improving the quality of life and building climate resilience,” Minister Rane said.
The Urban Forestry programme is part of a broader environmental strategy focused on sustainable development and urban rejuvenation, signalling a proactive approach by the Goa government to align urban planning with ecological preservation.
