New Delhi, Apr 1: The debate over the Waqf (Amendment) Bill escalated on Tuesday, with Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav vehemently opposing the legislation, accusing the BJP of attempting to gain control over all matters. However, Jagdambika Pal, Chairman of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on the Bill, refuted Yadav’s claims and challenged him to highlight any provision that harms the community.

Speaking to the media, Yadav said, “We are against the Waqf Board Bill because the BJP wants to interfere in everything. They want control everywhere.” He also questioned the support of Ajmer Dargah for the Bill, alleging BJP’s involvement.

Responding to these allegations, Pal urged Yadav to review the JPC’s 428-page report, which includes 14 amendments. “Which clause or amendment harms the poor, the common Muslim, women, or children? If there’s any harm, let him point it out,” he stated.

Pal also criticized the All-India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB), accusing it of politicizing the issue by urging people to wear black armbands during Ramadan. “Mosques were turned into political platforms,” he remarked, questioning the stance of AIMIM, DMK, BSP, and others on the matter.

He further pointed out AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi’s participation in the black armband protest, alleging it was done under AIMPLB’s instructions. Pal, however, lauded the Muslim community for celebrating Eid peacefully, embracing the spirit of 'Ganga-Jamuni tehzeeb.'

With the Business Advisory Committee set to decide the Bill’s agenda in the coming days, the political tussle over the amendments continues.
