Udupi, Mar 13: On the occasion of World Kidney Day under Theme of 'Are your kidney, ok? Detect early, protect kidney health', Adarsha hospital Udupi, held a Kidney health screening camp at New OPD Adarsha Hospital Udupi from 8 am to 12 noon on March 13.

The camp was inaugurated by Dr G S Chandrashekar, medicine director, Adarsha Hospital, by lighting the lamp.

Dr G S Chandrashekar, in his inaugural note, said, “When I think about the kidney, I remember diabetes and blood pressure patients. If one is suffering with a kidney disease then his family will suffer economically. It is better to prevent kidney disease. The tablets we intake also cause kidney problems, the tablets prescribed by doctors do not cause problems, but other tablets like pain killers without prescription cause problems. If the kidney problem results in dialysis, then one must undergo dialysis for life time. The patient undergoing dialysis must spend a minimum of Rs 25,000 per month, even if he avails free dialysis from government hospital, he must spend at least Rs 15,000 for medicine, resulting in 3 to 4 lacs per year. Therefore, we must prevent kidney problems. We must not take tablets if not needed without a prescription.”

Dr Megha Pai, consultant nephrologist, stating about kidney health awareness, said, “Every year. the second Thursday of March is celebrated as World Kidney Day to make people aware of the importance of a healthy kidney. The percentage of self-tests of kidney is very less, many are not aware that they are suffering from kidney problems. It is easy to say we will take dialysis but the future problems are only known to the patient family, dialysis is like a tip of an iceberg. The wideness of it is known only when we go deep. The patient will have very weak infection resistance. Out of 100 patients who need a kidney only 10 get transplanted, the other 90 die waiting. Those suffering from diabetes, people of age group above 40, hereditary kidney problems must frequently check their kidney health. To prevent kidney problems, we must drink about 3 litres of water a day, change our modern lifestyle and develop a healthy lifestyle, avoid processed food and exercise daily.”

In the camp free registration and consultation and free lab investigations on RBS, CBC, Urea, creatinine and urine routine were held.

The camp commenced with the prayer song by the hospital staff members. Anushree Acharya, welcomed the gathering and compered the event. Prakash, staff, delivered the vote of thanks.

The event was attended by participants of camp, staff members, students and others.
