Bengaluru, Mar 12: In a pioneering move towards inclusive travel, Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) in Bengaluru has introduced India’s first airport-based sensory room, designed to assist passengers with autism, anxiety, and other sensory or mental health conditions.

Strategically located near the 080 International Lounge on Level 4 of Terminal 2, the sensory room is a calm and controlled space tailored for neurodivergent individuals and those with sensory sensitivities.

Airports are often overwhelming environments, filled with bright lights, loud announcements, security screenings, and crowded spaces. These factors can be particularly distressing for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD), anxiety disorders, and PTSD.

To tackle these challenges, the sensory room at Bengaluru airport provides a therapeutic environment, helping passengers regulate their sensory input and feel more at ease before their journey.

Hari Marar, MD & CEO of Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), emphasised the airport’s dedication to passenger-friendly and inclusive infrastructure.

"Bengaluru Airport has always focused on innovation and efficiency, from our biophilic, sustainable Terminal 2 to digital advancements. The introduction of the sensory room reflects our commitment to ensuring a stress-free travel experience for all, making inclusivity a core value rather than just an added feature," Marar stated.

The sensory room, developed in collaboration with Incluzza, a leading disability inclusion organization, is backed by research in behavioral science and occupational therapy. Studies show that spending just 15–30 minutes in a calming environment can significantly reduce stress and improve emotional regulation, making travel more manageable for neurodivergent individuals.

Dipesh Sutariya, chairman & managing director of EnAble India, praised the initiative:

"Our partnership with BIAL in creating this sensory room is a testament to their deep commitment to accessibility and inclusion. The Sensory Room is one of several proactive steps ensuring that all travelers have a smooth and comfortable experience. We hope this initiative paves the way for similar efforts across India."

The multi-sensory space is equipped with features designed to engage, relax, and regulate sensory input, including ambient lighting such as bubble tubes, galaxy projectors, and LED cubes for customizable visual stimulation. Therapeutic elements like crash pads, weighted blankets, and therapy mats promote relaxation.

Interactive sensory tools, including floor and wall projections, a ball pool, and sensory toy stations, enhance cognitive engagement. Visual and tactile features such as the optical curtain, infinity mirror, and textured wall panels encourage sensory exploration.

Auditory relaxation tools like white noise machines and calming soundscapes help reduce noise sensitivity, while additional stress-relief aids, including balance boards, lava lamps, and aroma diffusers, contribute to improved focus and relaxation.
The space is carefully curated to cater to varying sensory needs, ensuring a welcoming and adaptable environment for all users.

With this initiative, Bengaluru Airport sets a new benchmark for inclusive travel in India, providing a haven for relaxation and self-regulation to make flying a stress-free experience for neurodivergent travelers and individuals with sensory sensitivities.
