Paris, Jan 17: Brazilian footballer Neymar has revealed that his former Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) teammate Kylian Mbappe grew "jealous" of his close relationship with Lionel Messi after the Argentine superstar joined the French club in 2021. Speaking on a podcast hosted by ex-Brazil striker Romario, Neymar attributed the lack of synergy between PSG’s star trio to ego clashes.
Neymar, who left PSG in 2023 to join Saudi club Al-Hilal, opened up about his initial camaraderie with Mbappe. “When he [Mbappe] arrived in 2017, we got along very well. I always told him he was destined to become one of the best players. We had dinners together, and he even visited my house,” Neymar shared.
However, Neymar said things changed when Messi joined PSG from Barcelona, a club where Neymar and Messi had a successful stint between 2013 and 2017.
“When Messi arrived, I think Mbappe became a little jealous. He didn’t want to share me with anyone, and that’s when the fights and behavioral changes began,” Neymar explained.
Ego clashes derailed PSG’s superstar trio
Neymar attributed the failure of the PSG trio—himself, Messi, and Mbappe—to reach their full potential to ego-driven conflicts.
“You have to understand that football is a team game. You can't play alone. Even if you are the best, you need others to pass you the ball. Ego got in the way, and that’s why it didn’t work,” Neymar admitted.
He emphasized the importance of teamwork, saying, “If no one runs or helps each other, winning is impossible in modern football.”
Neymar’s uncertain future
The 32-year-old forward, who has struggled with injuries in Saudi Arabia, remained tight-lipped about his future plans despite rumors of a potential return to Brazil or a move to Major League Soccer (MLS).
“Right now, I’m happy in Saudi Arabia, but in six months, everything can change,” Neymar said.
Neymar has played only a handful of games in the last 16 months due to injuries, raising questions about his long-term career trajectory.
