Mangaluru: St Agnes College (Autonomous) inaugurates certificate course for staff

Mangaluru, Jan 6: The course inauguration was held for the 'Basic skills of counseling for teachers' certificate course at St Agnes College (Autonomous) on January 4. The course aims to equip school teachers with essential counseling skills to effectively address the diverse emotional and social needs of their students.

Sr Dr M Venissa AC, principal, was the chief guest of programme. In her chief address, she emphasized the critical role of teachers in nurturing the holistic development of students, going beyond academics, highlighting the increasing need for teachers to possess strong counseling skills to identify and address potential mental health issues, guide students through academic challenges, and foster a supportive and inclusive learning environment.

The ceremony was attended by a number of school teachers from various schools in the region. The enthusiastic participation of the teachers reflected the growing recognition of the importance of mental health and well-being in the educational context.

The course was conducted by Vinatha K, HOD of psychology at St Agnes. She attained her PG from Bangalore University, and has been working in the college since 1991. She has presented papers at State, National and International levels, thus bringing in her expertise and imparting knowledge through this course. The course incorporated a blend of theoretical knowledge and practical application, including case studies, role-playing, and group discussions.

The programme was hosted by Divya Ramachandran, assistant professor, department of psychology. the ceremony began with a prayer song by students followed by lighting the lamp. Dr Hitakshi, assistant professor, welcomed the gathering. She outlined the objectives of the course, emphasizing its focus on practical skills such as active listening, empathy, problem-solving, and communication techniques.

The inauguration ceremony concluded with a vote of thanks by Vinatha, who expressed gratitude to all attendees and reiterated the commitment of St Agnes College in supporting the professional development of teachers and enhancing the overall well-being of students.
