Doping: Ashwini Akkunji, Five Other Athletes Banned for One Year

New Delhi, Dec 23 (PTI): India’s six top women athletes, including Asian Games double gold medallist Ashwini Akkunji, were on Friday handed a one-year ban for flunking dope tests earlier this year, virtually ending their chances of participating in the London Olympics next year.

All the six quartermilers — Mandeep Kaur, Sini Jose, Tiana Mary Thomas, Priyanka Panwar, Jauna Murmu and Akkunji — who flunked dope tests for banned steroids were not present when the decision was announced at the National Anti-Doping Agency headquarters in Delhi.

All of them can appeal against the bans to NADA appellate panel but their lawyers said they would assess the judgement before taking a decision on that. NADA panel head Dinesh Dayal announced a reduced penalty period as the athletes were not found guilty of intentionally taking the banned substances. The maximum suspension stands at two years for first-time violators.

“We find all the six athletes guilty of doping violations under clause 2.1 of Anti-doping Rule. The date of suspension begins from today and any period under provisional suspension shall be credited in their penalty period, which is one year,” he told reporters.

“We did not find any significant fault on the part of these athletes on how the banned substance entered their bodies and they will get reduced penalty under clause 10.5.2 NADA rule. Two athletes — Mary Tiana Thomas and Jauna Murmu — were tested twice in May and June and they cannot be held guilty on two counts,” he said.

But the banned athletes have a slim chance of making it to London if their replacements manage to qualify for the Games as the final say on who represents India in the event rests with the AFI.

NADA Director-General Rahul Bhatnagar said that under its rules, there will be only one reinstatement test.

“We will follow NADA rules and we will have only one test, which can be done the next day after their ban period is over. The results should come within 48 hours,” he said.

Ashwini Akkunji and company, I am sorry you all six will be banned for one year but do not worry as time flies fast and in the mean time you have time to practice for the next national and international event. I do not know whether this was a right judgement as the saying goes JUDGES are always right. Good luck.

Dear Ashwini, it is the will power which put you high on the table, there is nothing deliberate, but it is an act of negligence by you as well. Keep your target high and leave the rest to Almighty. You will excell.

STANOZOLOL & METHANDIENON are the anabolic steroids they if taken everyday will increase the Muscle Mass and hence improve the peformance .Many Medicines Contain substances related to this which are called steroids .Athletes if they take such medicines just before Performance there is liklihood getting detected in blood and hence fail in the Dope test .But in case of Ashwini the case is just mistake of the Ukranian Coach Yuri along with SAI Coaches who gave a Chines Imported Medicine Called GINSENG which is Ayurvedic like Chinese preparation which is used like Vitamins but it was Contaminated with steroids .So no mistake on the part of Ashwini .Here most important fact is Indians should not just blindly follow GHORA CHAMDI .Why did they rely on Ukranian Yuri??

This is all preplaned by NADA. They just want to keep these Athlets away from London Olympics. That's all. There is some hidden agenda. The ban should start from the day they tested positive and not from today? NADA has delailed their wordict intentionally to keep the girls away. These guys will make money by giving opportunity to new athletes. They don't bother whether they clinch Gold or not. Such people should be hangged. If they loose this opportunity at London Olympics next will be after 4 years, by that time athletes will loose there form. May God bless them give them opportunity at London Olympics. Even after giving clean chit by investigating agency why there should be a ban? Not acceptable.

Everyone knows that athletes didn't consume banned drugs deliberately.Even the judge who gave the verdict. Then why these innocent athletes have been banned for one year..? Because of the verdict our athletes lost a golden opportunity to participate in Olympics.I protest judgement. Do you ?

Quotating from TOI,"No complete exoneration is possible under WADA(WORLD ANTI DUPING AGENCY)using contaminated supplement".Two athlete's blood sample contained(Mandeep and Juvana)STANOZOLOL & METHANDIENON and I wish DR Kamath of DAIJI WORLD reader shed light on the banned substance.Pleading no guilty or innocence in the international athlete arena would not bring any solace to our international athletes. Therefore SAI must educate ,give orientation and supervise Coach's activities.Emotional, ignorance or passing the bucks to coach not able extortionate our athletes under the strict code of WADA.May this unfortunate incident open up Sport Ministry,s eye in checking all short comings in Sports and Games.
