Puttur, Oct 31: The Anti-women Harassment Cell and Women Empowerment Cell of St Philomena College (Autonomous), in association with the Rotary Club, organized a significant awareness programme on breast cancer for students on October 28 at the Silver Jubilee Hall of the college. The initiative aimed to educate students on the importance of early detection and preventive measures related to breast cancer.
Dr Antony Prakash Monteiro, principal of the college, presided over the event. In his presidential address, Dr Monteiro emphasized the importance of being proactive about health and utilizing the valuable information shared during the session. He urged the students to prioritize their well-being and remain vigilant.
The programme featured distinguished guests including Rtn Dr Sripathi Rao, president of the Rotary Club, Puttur, who delivered a motivating guest address. Dr Rao stressed the need for awareness and timely medical consultation, encouraging the students to stay informed about the risks associated with breast cancer.
Dr Ananyalakshmi, assistant professor at SDM Hospital, Ujire, gave a keynote address on breast cancer, highlighting its risk factors and the importance of early diagnosis. Her insightful talk laid the foundation for the subsequent discussions.
The resource person, Dr Smitha Rao, breast and endocrine surgeon and associate professor of oncology at K S Hegde Medical Academy, delivered an impactful and informative session. Drawing from her extensive experience as a senior fellow at TATA Cancer Hospital and Visiting Fellow at MSKU, New York, Dr Rao provided a comprehensive overview of breast cancer. She emphasized that early detection plays a crucial role in saving lives and detailed the steps individuals can take to monitor their health effectively.
The programme commenced with a prayer by Akhila and her team from II BSc. Accamma, a first-year BBA student, extended a warm welcome and Simran Taj from III BCom introduced the resource person to the audience. Tincy Thomas from III BCom compered the event. Priya, a first-year BBA student proposed a vote of thanks.
The awareness session was well-received, benefiting not only the students but also members of the Rotary Club, the Anti-Women Harassment Cell, and the Women Empowerment Cell.
