Mangaluru, Aug 8: The Department of Human Resource, St Joseph Engineering College (SJEC), in association with the Department of Mechanical Engineering organised a firefighting training programme in the campus for SJEC teaching and non-teaching staffs at Fr Fred Memorial Hall, Academic Block I on July 20 and August 3 in two batches. The event commenced with an inauguration ceremony, followed by a series of training sessions.
Mahmed Zulfikar Nawaz K P, the district fire officer (fire prevention) from Karnataka State Fire & Emergency Services, Mangaluru, chief guest of the programme, in his session through his rich expertise, explained the importance of the firefighting training to individuals which can save lives of people around them as well as the damage to property where they reside or work.
In his presentation, he showcased the major tragic fire accidents in different cities which caused huge loss in human lives and property because of lack of knowledge of handling fire accidents.
Dr John E D'Silva, the chief administrative officer of SJEC, graced the occasion as the guest of honour and shared his experience about need for this training. The programme was coordinated by Dr Shreeranga Bhat, HoD, Department of Mechanical Engineering, welcomed the gathering and Rakesh T Lobo, HR manager, SJEC addressed the gathering and explained the importance of this training. The training programme featured a comprehensive schedule designed to equip participants with essential firefighting skills which includes the theoretical session on understanding of various classes of fire, the fire triangle, different types of fire extinguishers and mode of evacuation. The session ended with the demonstration of extinguishing fire using different fire extinguishers.
The training sessions were delivered by Praveen, fire officer, Pandeshwar and Venkatesh, fire officer, Beltangady who shared their expertise in handling the fire in different ways using various resources available at the location of fire accident in case of emergencies. The session witnessed the participation of 150 registered staff members to become certified fire fighters.
The training aimed to enhance the fire safety knowledge and preparedness of the participants, contributing significantly to campus safety and emergency readiness. The event was a testament to SJEC's commitment to fostering a safe and well-prepared community. Rajesh Belchada, convener of the programme, proposed a vote of thanks.
