Mangaluru, Jul 22: The department of counselling at St Aloysius Pre-University College organized a series of awareness sessions for students on the POCSO Act, 2012 and the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006.
Renowned advocates Udayananda A and Sridhar Yenmakaje from the Mangaluru Bar Association served as resource persons.
The sessions aimed to educate students about the laws and empower them to identify signs of abuse or coercion. The advocates highlighted the importance of safeguarding children and women, referencing the 'Nirbhaya Case' and its impact on legislation. The discussion included the POCSO Act's coverage of all children below 18 years, its gender-neutral approach, child-friendly processes for reporting, recording and trial and the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act's objective to prevent marriages below the marriageable age.
By organizing these sessions, the college ensures that students are well-informed and equipped to protect themselves and their peers, thereby fostering a safer and more secure environment at the college. The initiative reflects the institution's commitment to student welfare and legal awareness, empowering young minds to take a stand against abuse and coercion.
