Mangaluru, Jul 13: In a harmonious blend of nature and education, St Agnes CBSE School celebrated the tree planting festival ‘Vanamahotsava’ on July 12.

The school hall was transformed into a vibrant haven of environmental awareness and green fervour, embodying the school's mission to 'uphold environmental preservation'. This annual event, dedicated to the conservation and reverence of the natural environment, mirrored the school's commitment to cultivating eco-consciousness among the students. The backdrop, featuring the evocative phrase 'Trees give us life; let's give something back', poignantly captured the spirit of the day.

The event began with a solemn prayer service focused on nature protection, setting a reflective and reverent tone for the day. The festivities unfolded with a captivating welcome dance, showcasing cultural expression, and paying homage to nature.

The welcome address exemplified the younger generation's enthusiasm and commitment to environmental stewardship. As a symbolic gesture of this commitment, the chief guest, Blanny D’Souza, renowned for his extraordinary achievements in terrace gardening, was welcomed with a potted plant. This gesture not only highlighted the significance of nurturing nature but also reinforced the event's overarching theme of environmental protection and sustainability.

The significance of Vanamahotsava day was eloquently articulated by Sweenel, who provided historical context and emphasized the festival's contemporary relevance. The event proceeded with an action song performed by first-grade students, celebrating nature and the act of tree planting. This charming performance embodied the innocence and hope of youth, serving as a heartfelt reminder of the future generations we must safeguard.

A skit based on the theme of forest conservation followed, creatively depicting the challenges and solutions involved in preserving our forests. This engaging performance inspired the audience to take proactive measures in their own lives to protect the environment.

Culminating the event, the ceremonial planting of a sapling by the chief guest, Blanny D’Souza, symbolized growth, renewal, and the commitment to a greener future. This act served as a tangible representation of the day's core message, reinforcing the importance of tree planting in combating climate change.

During the celebration, the remarkable achievements of students who excelled in the 2023-2024 International English and Science Olympiads were proudly acknowledged. In the English Olympiad, Olga Jane Walter (Grade 5) secured 25th zonal rank in the Karnataka zone, Simra Mariyam (Grade 6) ranked 32nd, and Joan P Kurian (Grade 4) ranked 100th. In the Science Olympiad, Saiksha S Amin (Grade 6) ranked 82nd, while Sthuthi P Kamath (Grade 6) and Nehal Anchan (Grade 5) ranked 91st and 99th, respectively. Additionally, the exceptional achievement of Kirthi from Grade 3C was acknowledged. She competed in the second Karnataka State Level Skating Competition held in Shimoga, where she won one gold and two silver medals. Kirthi was warmly congratulated for her remarkable performance.

In a world where asphalt dominates over natural jungles, Blanny D’Souza stands as a beacon of environmental resilience and innovation. In his address, D’Souza asserted the transformative power of sustainable practices in urban environments, advocating for the restoration of green spaces within our ever-expanding urban landscapes. He emphasized how individuals can play a crucial role in reviving nature even in the most unlikely places.

Drawing from his experience as a recipient of the Pratyusha World Records for cultivating the most varieties of fruit and vegetables in a terrace garden, he shared valuable insights on how innovative gardening techniques can enhance food security and promote environmental stewardship. His message was a clarion call to action, inspiring all present to embrace sustainable practices and contribute to a greener future.

The vice principal Sr Meena Fernandes AC eloquently expressed that nature is our greatest teacher, inviting us to harmonize with the natural world. She reaffirmed the importance of collective effort and the impact of individual actions in making a meaningful difference for the future of our planet

The programme was compered by Risha and Kashvi, the welcome address was delivered by Ridhima. The proceedings concluded with a vote of thanks presented by Alvia.

Vanamahotsava at St Agnes School was a resounding success, blending education, culture, and environmental activism.
