Jeddah, Sep 28: A woman has been sentanced to 10 whiplashes for violating certain religious rules that prohibit women from driving among other activities in Jeddah. This sentence comes exactly two days after King Abdullah issued women the right to vote and also to run for public office, effective from 2015.
The woman, by the name Shaimaa Ghassaneya, was found driving in Jeddah in July. Usually, for such a crime, the offender gets detention of several days. But in this case, the court has resorted to a severe form of punishment for the 'crime'.
As a part of a social awareness media driven campaign 'Women2Drive', several women have been encouraged to violate the driving ban. So far two women are expected to appear for trail in the months to come.
