Mangaluru, Oct 29: In a remarkable show of commitment towards elderly care and community well-being, the Department of Occupational Therapy at the Manipal College of Health Professions (MCHP), Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), celebrated World Occupational Therapy Day by hosting a transformative two-day workshop titled "Fall Prevention for Healthy Aging: Capacity Building for Occupational Therapists."
The event took place on October 27 -28 and witnessed the congregation of professionals from various corners of India.
The workshop was inaugurated by Dr H Manjunatha Hande, a prominent professor from the Department of Medicine at Kasturba Medical College and Hospital, Manipal. "This workshop is a testament to MCHP's dedication to enhancing the skills of occupational therapists. The knowledge and practices shared here are crucial in addressing the challenges faced by our elderly population, ensuring they lead safer and more independent lives," said Dr Hande, emphasizing the workshop's significance.
Present at the inauguration were other eminent personalities, including Dr G Arun Maiya, dean of MCHP, Dr Vinita A Acharya, head of the Department of Occupational Therapy, and Asish Das, the convenor of the event, along with esteemed faculty members and enthusiastic participants.
“Occupational therapists play a pivotal role in building a resilient community, and this workshop serves as a perfect platform for professionals to enhance their skills and knowledge,” stated Dr G Arun Maiya, expressing his support and encouragement for the initiative.
Dr Vinita A Acharya kicked off the event with an insightful discussion on this year's theme, “Unity through Community,” shedding light on the indispensable role of occupational therapy in elderly care. Dr Sebestina Anita DSouza, professor at MCHP, and coordinator at the Centre for Studies on Healthy Aging, led the workshop, emphasizing the importance of fall prevention and the need for community-centric strategies tailored to Indian contexts.
With several participants from different states, the workshop turned into a melting pot of ideas and experiences, all centered around improving the quality of life for the elderly. The participants were actively involved in practical sessions, including risk assessments and intervention planning at a local old age home, ensuring a comprehensive learning experience.
The event concluded on an exceptional note, with participants sharing their heartfelt appreciation for the invaluable knowledge and practical insights gained. “This workshop was not just an educational journey, but a real eye-opener, showing us the immediate need for community involvement in elderly care,” shared one of the participants, reflecting the overall sentiment of the attendees.
