Karkala: College Students 'Chained' for Stealing Gold Jewellery

Karkala, Aug 19: The Karkala police succeeded in arresting two college students who allegedly visited a jewellery shop in the town a few days back in the guise of prospective customers, and took away four gold chains worth Rs 1,13,500. The arrests were made on Thursday August 18.
The arrested have been identified as Immanuel Pradip (22) from Hebri, and Shivananda Nayak (22), a resident of Puttur Purusharakatte. Both of them are students of a college in Puttur.
The jewellery shop owner said that Pradip came to his Santosh Jewellery in Kabettu here at around 7.30 pm on August 13, and enquired whether his family members had called the shop. He also asked for gold chains. After four different chains were shown to him, he asked to see a bigger chain. Shobha, who was the only person available at the shop at the time, growing suspicious, clicked Pradip's photograph while pretending to call the shop owner.
By the time a bigger chain was brought out and shown, Pradip reportedly took away all the four chains, ran to a motorbike driven by Shivananda Nayak that was waiting nearby, and fled the scene, as per the version of the shop owner.
The policemen succeeded in arresting the accused and his accomplice on the basis of the photograph. All the four gold chains and the motorbike in which the two had sped away, were confiscated from the arrested youngsters.
Udupi district superintendent of police, Dr Y S Ravikumar, has praised the timely action taken by deputy superintendent of Karkala, Santosh Kumar, circle inspector, Vijaya Prasad, police sub-inspector, Ravi B S, other police personnel, as well as Shubha K, who had clicked the photograph of the thief, which helped in solving the case within five days.
