'Aid Without Religion' Trust Endeavours to Spread Rationality

Mangalore, Jul 30: The rationalist association led by its president Narendra Nayak registered an 'Aid Without Religion' trust here on Saturday July 30, deliberately choosing an inauspicious time to prove superstitious practices and beliefs as baseless.

"Many times we rationalists have wanted to help people who are less privileged than us but have found shortcomings in that most of such charitable activity is carried out by religious institutions and those promoting superstitious practices and beliefs," states a press release from Narendra Nayak, president of Federation of Indian Rationalist Associations.

The press note further adds, "It was decided to first register one (a trust) and we have been on the lookout for a very inauspicious day for it. The Ati Amavasya is supposed to be one of the most inauspicious days in this part of India and this falls on the July 30, that too on a Saturday, which is considered to be very inauspicious day. A new moon on Amavasya falling on a Saturday is a boon for scaremongers and a bonanza for those who perform rituals to ward off the evil effects of such deadly combinations of unlucky events!"

The registration was done at Rahu Kalam, a time of the day which is the most inauspicious - so it was a double rather a triple whammy, a Saturday, new moon day that too in the month of Ati which is considered to be the most unlucky time and at Rahu Kalam! The trust has been named 'Aid Without Religion' with the motto to make AWR not WAR," adds the press note.

The aims and objectives of the trust are to collect funds for helping people and institutions where there are no religious rituals, superstitious practices, unscientific systems of medicine and such supernatural beliefs. "We aim to help individuals and also conduct activities to spread rational thinking among people. The trust has also decided not to accept any donations or aid from institutions following such practices," stated Narendra Nayak.

"We are starting with one trustee and small donation from his personal funds but aim to collect from many of our like-minded people and use that for purposes mentioned above. With the most inauspicious time and day for its registration the trust will start its activities with inauguration on another such day at a very bad time to challenge such superstitions among our people."

I have thought of donating , But I want to donate first because I am superstitious in one thing..i.e.'A beginner will always have good luck: beginner's luck. Any how I will come to your office within a fortnight. I always support Prof. Narrendra Nayak in his rational deeds.

    Well-done Mr. Nayak. Congratulations. There is a need of such a movement in Mangalore.All are very talkative about religion and beliefs. No place for rationalism. Encourage the questions......... Why???? How??? When???? What????

    I am amused that focus is on ing the inauspicious time for everything.. hope recipients will not have the wait for the inauspicious time for aid. Honestly, It is a very great and laudable effort on the part of Mr Nayak to break barriers when aid is in question. May he find fulfillment in his calling. Keep it up Mr Nayak.

    Birth of a new trust on Ati Amavasya? follwed by Saturday??? is not a inauspicious! or not a inauspicious day. Amavasya is nothing but the end of one lunar month.Saturday is good for wealth. Amavasya is the end of Krishna Paksha and the start of Sukla Paksha. There is no religion for Amavasya or Poornima. All religion people salute to solar system which created by a unknown creator. We are undivided part of this system. I don't think it is a challenge. One of my freiend married on this day 30 years back and he is still happy with his married life. Everybody shold know that is is very hard to swim at high tide!The periodic rise and fall of the sea level under the gravitational pull of the moon!and something that may increase or decrease in the trees, animals and human beings!!! Is anybody have these experience? Thanks folk's.

    great intention of serving people. is this a new cult? Superstitions are in all religions, soe where indeed made superstitions so you can get benefit out ofbthose practices, where as some are absolutely ridiculous, if scientific logic can explain the rationale behind such practice then only it can be considered of any value. for instance, it is a practise to pray before eating, this in fact promotes digestion. Jains refrain from eating food after sunset, it was basically to adhere to their line of belief of ahimsa, at night they might end up eating insects/small flies, also it is a healthy habit to digest yor food before one goes to sleep so that you can avoid I'll effects. All poor people are people who have superstitions..so would you help them? Or they have to believe in rationality? it is good to get rid of superstitions and promote a scientific and spiritual society.
