Mangalore, Jul 30: A J Hospital & Research Centre which is in the threshold of celebrating decennial year with its productive medical service to society has achieved yet another milestone in the form of complex cardiac (heart) surgery. A press meet regarding the case was held at the press club here in the presence of Dr Prashanth Marla, medical director of the hospital on Saturday July 30.
A 64-year-old patient, by name S V Naik from Honavar had one episode of synocopal attack after a meal, lasting for about three minutes. Patient was not a known diabetic or hypertensive. He was referred to A J Hospital & Research Centre for further evaluation.
Dr Purushotham, Cardiologist at A J Hospital & Research Centre who did initial investigations, diagnosed him to have severe aortic valvular stenosis with Aortic root narrowing. The seriousness of this problem is that, in addition to the valve imposing strain on the heart, the aortic root was also contributing significantly to the symptoms and a valve replacement alone would not have solved the problem.
A successful Aortic root enlargement (NICK’s Procedure) with aortic valve replacement was done probably for the first time in this region on this 64 year male with severe calcific aortic stenosis with small aortic root. The annulus was enlarged with pericardial patch thus paving way for large 21” bio prosthesis aortic valve to be placed.
Post operative period was smooth. This corrective surgical procedure will definitely help patients with small aortic root, improving patient outcome from surgery as well as quality & expectancy of life.
This rare and first of its kind case reported in this region was completed successfully by the Cardiac Surgery team of A.J. Hospital & Research Centre, Mangalore. The team headed by Dr Jayashankar Marla, Chief Cardiothoracic Surgeon included Dr. Madhav Kamath, Cardiothoracic Surgeon, Dr Gururaj Thantri, Chief Cardiac Anesthesiologist, Dr Naganand, Anaesthesiologist and Staff.
