Mangaluru, Jun 25: An awareness programme on 'fire safety and Health Safety' was organized by First Neuro Hospital, Padil, on June 24 in Milagres Central School, Mangaluru.
Resource person Sathyaraj explained the importance of conducting fire and safety awareness programme. He explained different types of fire extinguishers, and what are the measures to be followed for the different kinds of fire out breaks. He also demonstrated with the model how to rescue the victims of the fire out break and to give first aid. Opportunity was given to the students and faculty members to give first aid. Interaction session was held with the students to clarify their doubts. Lastly, a demonstration on extinguishing the fire was demonstrated to the students and faculty at the school grounds. Chance was given to the students and staff members to operate different types of fire extinguishers. It was an enriching session.
Health check up was done for the Milagres Central School faculty by Rakshitha, staff nurse of First Neuro Hospital, Padil, Mangaluru. Sharmila K Welcomed the gathering and Ayesha Haneena proposed vote of thanks.
The school principal Fr Uday Fernandes and staff members were present for this programme. The session was concluded with presenting a bouguet of flowers as a token of appreciation.
Talk and demonstration by Sathyaraj:
Fire is a chemical reaction emitting heat and that converts a fuel and oxygen into carbon dioxide and water. If uncontrolled it will give rise to massive destruction.
The students were made familiar with the types of extinguishers in their vicinity. It was explained that there are two types of fire extinguishers – one using gas and the other one with powder. Starving the fire is the mantra for extinguishing fire.
Local fire helpline no 112 has to be informed whenever there is a fire outbreak. Simultaneously, measures have to be taken by the people around in order to prevent more disaster.
Ex: Switching off fan if the sofa set is on fire, turning off gas knob etc, are some of the actions to be taken immediately.
The students were made to understand the significance of metal handles being provided on LPG cylinders. As it lacks any scent, Ethyl Mercapten is added to the LPG cylinders to detect leakage if any.
PARS( PinAim Rotate and Save) and PASS ( Pin Anticlockwise Squeeze and Save) – These were the mnemonics for the usage of the fire extinguishers.
The role of each individual during emergency was given the mnemonic RACE- Rescue Alert Confine Extinguish.
Health Safety
ABCD mnemonic was demonstrated for providing first aid to the person being laid unconscious. The technique for reviving an unconscious person was demonstrated and also made the students and staff, learn the skill.
There was a interaction session for the students to clarify their doubts.
Lastly, a demonstration on extinguishing the fire was demonstrated to the students and faculty at the school grounds. It was an enriching session.
