Udupi, Apr 28: CSI Lombard Memorial college of Nursing Udupi, holds regional conference on Climate resilience: Promoting sustainability at LMH Multipurpose Hall, Udupi on April 28.
The event was organized by faculty and students of the department of Community Health Nursing.
The event was inaugurated by Dr Leena K C, principal of Yenepoya College of Nursing Mangalore, by lighting the lamp along with other dignitaries.

Dr Leena K C, principal of Yenepoya College of Nursing Mangalore, addressing the gathering said, “Having conference in nature practically is thought provoking. I am sure having such conferences where real experience of what is being taught is experienced by the students. Giving a thought to sustainability is admirable. Every little effort from every one of us to ensure that environmental sustainability will help us to preserve this planet for our future generation. Being aware about the multiple impacts that environmental related issues will have on mankind is supposed to give serious thought. The students attending the conference should become torch bearers of promoting sustainability or the future of our generation.
Sustainability should begin in our homes, hostels, by saying no to plastics, segregating waste, reducing waste, reusing waste, compost waste, and planting saplings. Let us take a pledge to work towards sustainability so that the world will become a better place.”
Dr Sushil Jathanna, managing director of Lombard Memorial Hospital, Udupi, in his presidential address said, “When we did a survey on climate change before we started ‘inspire’ not many students and staff were aware about climate change and today students and faculty coming forward to raise awareness about climate change and sustainability. Climate change is one of the biggest challenges facing global public health. The sad part is that 5 percent of all global greenhouse gases emitted in this world come from the healthcare sector. Consequences of these greenhouse gas emissions from the health sector are responsible for rising sea levels, increasing heat, unpredictable weather and damage to people’s health. Healthcare centres are supposed to promote health and prevent disease, yet to find out we are causing disease.
Therefore, we must raise awareness about climate change. In Lombard we have launched a programme called ‘INSPIRE’. Students must remember that climate change is important and we all need to do something, ‘Small changes made by many people will have a much bigger impact than significant or large changes made by a small population’. We do not own this earth, we are travellers on this earth and we have inherited this world and global health in favour of children and grandchildren, if we do not do anything our children and grandchildren suffer the consequences. It’s time to stop talking and start acting.”
The event commenced with the invocation by the students of 3rd year BSc nursing, followed by a blessing from Rachel D'Silva.
