Udupi, Mar 7: After a water tanker belonging to a contractor engaged by Udupi Power Corporation Ltd (UPCL) hit a bicycle rider near Admar railway crossing on Admar-Mudarangady Road on Sunday March 6 evening, the cyclist lost his life. The tanker hit an electric pole and cashew tree on the left side of the road, before hitting the bicycle in question. The victim has been identified as Keshava (35), son of Kurumbila, resident of Yellur Darkas House.
Keshava, whose marriage scheduled for this month was postponed because of the ill health of his mother, was to marry next month. He was returning after taking part in a marriage function of a relative in Katpady, when tragedy struck. The policemen said that Mohan from Paniyoor, who was driving the tanker in question, is a habitual drunkard known for reckless driving. He has been arrested.
The spot presented a horrific scene after the accident, as Keshava’s hand that was ripped off, and his brain, got scattered on the road. Three women, who were riding on this tanker, were saved, as they had alighted a little ahead of the accident spot, it is gathered. The electric pole got snapped, and power supply to the region was severed, and the tanker fell on its side.
A case was registered in Padubidri police station, and Kaup circle inspector of police, Cheluvaraju, has begun investigation.
