Bantwal, Oct 30: The Karnataka government has selected Lokayya Shera, a celebrated folk artist and deity dancer, for this year’s Rajyotsava Award in the folk arts category. The son of Angu and Akkhu, Shera has devoted over 57 years to the art of deity worship and performance.
Renowned for his significant contributions to deity dance, Shera has conducted ceremonies for local deities in Tulunadu, including Kallurti, Kalkuda, Panjurli, Chamundi, Dhoomavati, and Rakeshwari.
He performs around a hundred rituals each year, totaling thousands over his long career. In addition, he plays a central role in village festivals and manages rituals for clan and border deities.
Shera is well-versed in the oral traditions of Tulunadu, masterfully reciting local myths and rituals associated with various deities. His commitment to preserving the integrity of deity dance has garnered him numerous accolades.
Currently serving as the honorary president of the Nalikeyavara Samaja Seva Sangha in Bantwal, Shera has also held leadership roles in various public organisations.
His accolades include the district Rajyotsava Award in 2012, the Republic Day Award, the Ideal Shringa Award, and the Saurabha Award, reflecting his outstanding contributions to the arts.
