Kasargod, Feb 19: “The people of the country are forced to hang their heads in shame because of scams involving the Congress party, which are tumbling out with each passing day. These scams have created more problems for the common people,” said Kerala Chief Minister, V S Achuthanandan. He was addressing the party activists and the general public, after inaugurating the south regional level jatha organized by the Left Front to create awareness among the people about the development initiatives undertaken by it in the state, on Friday February 18.
He accused the Congress of undertaking a campaign through its jatha with the specific objective of hiding the achievements of the Left Front government in the state. “The Congress leaders have cheated the people of the state by not raising their voice against the reduction of ration food grains quota by the centre. By the time the jatha undertaken by the Congress ended in Thiruvananthapuram, one of its leaders was jailed for corruption, while another was waiting to be jailed for sexual escapades. In the coming days, more Congress leaders will be behind bars. How can such leaders save the state from disaster as claimed by them?” he questioned.
He pointed out that during the period the Congress party was in power in the state, 1,500 farmers had committed suicide. The CM claimed that the Left Front government had taken initiatives to disburse compensations to these families and to make farming more lucrative. Although the state government has been making efforts to arrest inflation, the centre has been doing nothing in this matter,” he commented.
He also accused the central government of meting out step motherly treatment to the people of Kerala. He said that Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, and leader of the opposition in the state, Oommen Chandy, have pledged themselves to save the corrupt people. He pointed out that former union minister, A Raja, and former Kerala minister, R Balakrishna Pillai, have been found guilty of misdeeds and jailed.
The CM inaugurated the jatha by draping shawl around C Diwakaran, food and civil supplies minister, who leads the jatha. MLA, C H Kunhambu, presided. Jatha Committee members, education minister M A Baby, Devaswom Board minister, Kadannapalli Ramachandra, MP, P Karunakaran, C K Nanu and various others leaders were present.
