Udupi, Oct 30: Ambedkar Yuvasene (R), Udupi staged a protest titled 'Udupi Congress Hatao - Dalit Bachao' near the Udupi District Congress Office on October 30, condemning alleged neglect and injustices faced by the Dalit community under Congress governance.
Dalit activist Jayan Malpe, during the protest said, “Udupi superintendent of police (SP) is allegedly filing ‘B’ reports in cases of atrocities against Dalits, even when evidence and court orders for imprisonment exist. Despite substantial proof, the SP registers ‘B’ reports, effectively dismissing these cases. In many parts of Udupi, officials and employees exhibit anti-Dalit behavior.”
Jayan further alleged that the district-in-charge minister visits Udupi once in three months only to collect bribes, ignoring the grievances of the Dalit community. "We have urged Congress leaders to oppose this practice by stating ‘Go back’, but our appeals go unheeded. Despite our previous support for Congress, they have shown that they do not stand for Dalits," Jayan added.
Jayan criticized Udupi district leaders for allegedly ignoring the needs of Dalits. “As a president of Udupi district congress, if you cannot address the challenges faced by the most marginalized communities, why continue in office?” Malpe questioned. He announced that an appeal is being submitted to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge for the removal of these local leaders.
Protestors expressed frustration over the district administration’s failure to distribute DC Manna land to Dalits, as well as alleged misappropriation of welfare funds designated for Dalit support. Repeated appeals to the Congress party and local leaders for assistance have reportedly gone unanswered.
Notable Dalit leaders including Krishna Bangera, Sanjeeva, Raviraj, Harish Salian, Sumithra, Sundar Kerkado, Ram M Mayyadi, Deepak Kodavoor and others joined the protest.
