Mysore, Feb 16: Minister for science and technology, environment and fisheries, Krishna J Palemar, urged for banning the use of mobile phones, gutkha and plastic within the campuses of schools and colleges. He was speaking after inaugurating third conference of Karnataka Science and Technology Academy, and the exhibition that will be open from February 15 and 22, at the Senate Hall of Mysore University on the occasion of the 50th anniversary celebrations of Manasagangotri.

“Of late, there is an increased incidence of use of mobile phones, gutkhas and plastic bags in educational institutions. They can be injurious to health. Hence, universities and educational institutions should moot steps to stop this menace,” he advised.

He informed that the state government proposes to establish a Regional Science Centre in the city, and that the central government has approved the same. The cost of this project is Rs 8.5 crore, and it will focus on scientific development and using of latest technology for the use of common people, especially agriculturists. In addition, 16 regional sub-centres will also be opened all over the state, he added.

Medical education minister, S A Ramadas, said that a science and technology park for the children will be set up in a 35-acre plot near Lalita Mahal in the city, and that funds for the same would be provided in this year’s budget.

On this occasion, well-known agricultural scientist, Prof R Dwarakinath, was felicitated on behalf of Karnataka Science and Technology Academy.
