Udupi, Oct 22: Model United Nations (MUN) an event organized by the students of Manipal Institute of Technology ( MIT) will begin from Friday October 22. The event is a three-day affair comprising 6 sessions during which delegates shall discuss and debate various agendas.
The inauguration and the opening ceremony will be held at the MIT AC Seminar Hall, Manipal here. Prof MD Nalapat, director for department of Geopolitics, UNESCO Peace Chair, MU and M V Kamath, honorary director of MIC will be the chief guests.
“MUN is an academic replica of the United Nations and aims at educating the participants about various countries, effective communication and multilateral diplomacy”, said Dr Kumkum Garg, director MIT. Speaking about the event Abishek Rajan, president of MUN said, “The fourth edition of MUN is
expected to be a bigger success with more than 250 colleges and 200 delegates participating in the event. This year MUN will also see international participation with students from Singapore, Bangkok and Nigeria turning up for the event.”
Delegates are expected to turn up for the event from India and abroad. Students will be divided into different groups representing different countries and issues will be discussed in detail. This will work exactly on the model guidelines of the United Nations Organisation.
There are six councils that will be divided this time unlike last year where only five councils were included. “The event Crisis Committee has never been done before. This is for the first time it has been included and we have taken it as a challenge. We hope to organize it well”, said Surbhi kanga, Sec. General of MUN.
Ramesha C, associate director for Student Welfare and Hostels and Rajat Gupta, director for Media Relations were also present at the press meet.
The motive of the entire event is to educate the participants about the functioning of the United Nations and not only understanding the perceptions of other countries on world issues but also coming up with solutions for issues plaguing the entire world. The research that will be done on the issues is meant to expand the knowledge base of the participants. MUN also helps students in developing their public speaking and communication skills and also hones their negotiating capabilities.
