Bangalore, Oct 14: Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa’s Second Floor Test in three days in the same week, will also be his fifth.
As things stand, the ruling BJP is expected to win hands down in the trust vote as it enjoys the support of at least 107 MLAs, including the Speaker, in the reduced strength of 208 members in the Karnataka Assembly after the disqualification of 16 MLAs, who will not be able to attend or participate in the voting. If the ruling party manages to 'lure' some more MLAs from Congress and JD(S) or at least prevail upon them to abstain, the margin of victory will be still more.
Whichever way one looks at the dramatic political developments in the State, Karnataka assembly and Chief Minister Yedddyurappa will certainly be creating history in the entire country for obvious reasons.
Incidentally, Yeddyurappa had faced the first floor test in November 2007 but resigned even before voting as the coalition partner JD(S) had ditched it. Subsequently, after the May 2008 assembly polls, the then Governor Rameshwar Thakur had asked Yeddyurappa to prove his majority in the House and accordingly the floor test was taken in June 2008, which was cleared with the unconditional support extended by all the 6 Indepedents.
Yeddyurpapa’s fourth floor test was on Monday, October 11, and he is now asked to prove his majority on Thursday, October 14, by Governor H R Bhardwaj for the second time.
Meanwhile, the Congress and JD(S) leaders, who had taken exception to today’s floor test on the ground that it was bound by the High Court verdict next week on the disqualification of 16 MLAs, are understood to have decided to participate and even vote against the Chief Minister.
The session will commence amid tight security shortly at 11 am.
