Kochi, Jan 17: Kerala's first airline, Air Kerala, has officially declared Cochin International Airport as its operational hub. The airline is set to begin domestic flight operations by June 2025, connecting Tier II and III cities across South and Central India, according to Harish Moideen Kutty, chief operating Officer of Air Kerala.
The no-frills airline, which currently operates two dry-leased aircraft, plans to expand its fleet and eventually purchase its own planes. By 2027, Air Kerala aims to achieve a fleet size of 20 airplanes and venture into international markets.
Conceived initially as a government-private partnership, the airline is now backed by Keralite entrepreneurs who prioritize affordability and accessibility. The initiative targets both domestic travelers and expatriate Malayalis, promising competitive fares and enhanced connectivity.
Cochin International Airport, which managed 63.5% of Kerala’s air traffic and recorded over one crore passengers in 2023-24, has pledged full support to Air Kerala's operations. The airline expects to capitalize on India's 16% year-on-year growth in domestic passenger traffic, aiming to tap into this burgeoning market.
Further announcements regarding ticket bookings and schedules are expected in the coming months as Air Kerala prepares to revolutionize air travel in the region.
