Mangalore, Oct 12: Former union minister, B Janardan Poojary, strongly backed the steps initiated by the state Governor, Hansraj Bhardwaj, relating to the unprecedented political developments in the state. Addressing a press conference here on Monday October 11, he opined that the Governor was right in using the constitutional powers vested with him.
“The Governor has the right to guide the government and take steps as and when required. Under schedule 10, legislators can be disqualified only on two grounds, either when they leave their parent parties on their own, or when they violate the party directives on the floor of the assembly,” Poojary explained.
Poojary felt that in disqualifying a number of legislators, assembly speaker, K G Bopaiah, had exceeded the powers he enjoys under the constitution. “The independent legislators had lent their support to the state government, and they were not members of the BJP. The speaker also erred in not providing for a debate on the instruction issued by the Governor,” he analyzed. He accused the BJP state president and other office bearers of unnecessarily blaming the Governor for the unsavoury developments.
Poojary criticized Yeddyurappa government of celebrating victory on the corpse of democracy. Holding that the Governor had rightly recommended for the imposition of President’s rule in the state, he felt that the Governor was left with no other alternatives to ensure that constitutional provisions are respected and followed in the state.
