Bantwal, Apr 9: Plastic is currently fatal to the entire biomass. Plastic waste has a terrible impact on the environment. Although plastic is known to be dangerous, its use is increasing day by day. With the aim of creating a plastic-free campus and for the optimal handling of non-recycled plastic in the Modankap environment Carmel College's, National Service Scheme unit has embarked on an 'Eco Brick Information & Fabrication' programme.

What is an 'Eco Brick'?

The maintenance of non-reusable plastic in our daily lives is a challenge. We see people throwing away and burning plastic waste that is used in their daily activities. In this regard, eco-brick is playing an important role in the proper handling of non-recyclable plastic waste.

Clean the plastic waste which are used in your daily lives and which cannot be recycled cut those plastic waste into small pieces, insert it into the plastic bottles and compress it with the help of a stick. The finished bottle is called eco-brick. Approximately three months of non-recycled plastic waste can be used to convert a two-litre cold drink bottle into an eco-brick.

These eco-bricks are used in building construction, in the construction of the college's campus wall and the courtyard, as well as to build locks for plant trees and to construct seated sofa bench-lined furniture. Eco-brick information and fabrication programme was started with the aim of achieving the plastic-free campus and for the optimal handling of non-recycled plastic in the Modankap environment by Carmel College's National Service Scheme unit.

This programme was headed by Mangalore University NSS coordinator Dr Nagarathna K A under the guidance of college principal, Dr Sr Latha Fernandez AC, NSS program officers, Madhura K, Deepti and lecturer in Hindi Chandrika Rao, National Service Scheme volunteers have been engaged in eco-bricks preparation in their spare time for the past three months.

During their spare time, students collect non-recyclable plastic waste from each of the stores in the Modankap region. Plastic waste is also collected from various outlets of the Bantwal Coastal Festival held last month. Likewise, plastic waste scattered on the roadside of Modankap region were collected and those non-recyclable plastic are used in the preparation of eco-bricks.

The shop owners and the managers of the coastal festival are also very supportive during the plastic collection drive. In addition to this, every student of the college is making eco-bricks in their own homes. Currently, about 75 eco-bricks are already being prepared in the college. As is our plan, it is decided to prepare the bench as soon as possible with the help of eco-bricks prepared by the students to sit on the college campus.

Eco-bricks information

Carmel College Modankap National Service Scheme volunteers provide students with information on the need and preparation of eco-brick for students by visiting the various school and pre-university colleges in Bantwal taluk and the school, college students are convinced to make eco-bricks in their homes. It is also decided to build benches in the respective schools and colleges with the help of eco-bricks prepared in their schools or college. We have received positive feedback from all the schools and colleges we visited to conduct eco-brick information and fabrication programme and they have indicated their support for the success of our project.

Eco-bricks are made from plastic waste which cannot be recycled. This eco-brick is very useful and plays an important role in preventing environmental pollution.
