Mangaluru, Mar 24: It has been decided to exercise diligence and caution when executing pending Smart City project works, as the high court had stalled the works once citing violation of rules. The works henceforth will be executed properly and with a lot of care. In order to see that all rules are complied with, the Smart City Limited has decided to keep a close watch on the contractors.
The high court gave its go ahead a week back for the smart city works here after the works remained suspended for two months. The work has not resumed in full scale because of shortage of crushed stones and other reasons.
The smart city work was stopped for two months because of the fact that rules were not followed in disposing of demolition waste in a proper way. As per the instruction of the high court, The National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) team arrived here, scrutinised the smart city works, and gave a report on the rules to be followed when executing works. The court, after getting affidavits signed by the concerned, was permitted to start work subject to the supervision of NEERI.
At present, only minor smart city works have begun. Plastering, blocks etc of buildings have begun. Underground drainage works have also begun at a few places. But road works and concrete works have not started. Now, smart city contractors have to furnish certificates every week about following smart city rules. The officials too, visit the spot every day and ensure that rules and conditions are being met. The works have to be completed before the monsoon that is round the corner, begins. There is a shortage of crushed stone as stone quarries have stopped working. The city corporation has already identified Pachanady for disposal of demolition waste.
