Mangaluru, Feb 19: Road Safety awareness programme was observed at 8.30 am on February 6, at the entrance of the school gate. Gopala Krishna Bhat, the traffic inspector of East Kadri was the chief guest. He was escorted by the guide captains and the guides of St Agnes School. The superior and the joint secretary of St Agnes Institution, Sr Dr Lydia Fernandes AC, the principal of St Agnes College, Sr Dr Venessa AC, the principal St Agnes School Sr Maria Gracilda AC and the traffic police of Kadri police station were the other dignitaries.
A prayer song was sung by the students of grade VIII. Tr Priya welcomed the public gathering. School auto/van drivers, teachers and students participated in the awareness programme. The chief guest in his speech emphasised the need for safe roads throughout the country as every year lac of people lose their lives in road accidents causing trauma to the family of the deceased. He encouraged the students to start early to school to avoid road accidents so that they can be safe as well as provide safety to others. He also said that children 4 years and above should wear a helmet while travelling in a two-wheeler. He urged the students to be aware of the traffic rules and abide by them and promised to give awareness programmes to all the students of St Agnes campus.
Guide captains and Guides of St Agnes School distributed the pamphlets on road safety measures. Later, the students repeated the slogans on road safety to highlight the importance of safe roads. Various activities like poster making, slogan writing, paintings, essay writing, singing, dancing, jingles, mime video and comic stripe were conducted for the students as part of the event.
The road safety project concluded by organizing a public awareness rally on February 12. The inspector of Kadri police station, Gopala Krishna Bhat along with the other traffic police, guide captains, guides, staff and students of grade X held a rally from the school gate to the main road shouting slogans on road safety. The motive behind organizing the rally was to make the students think about development wherein road safety plays an important role. There is a need for society at large to take notice of the issue and to join hands to make road safety a social movement.
