Mangalore, Apr 20: The process of issuing notification and acceptance of nominations for the gram panchayat (GP) elections will begin in the district on Wednesday April 21.
Giving details of the GP elections in the district, district deputy commissioner, Ponnuraj, informed at a press conference held in the city on Monday April 19, that the elections for 200 gram panchayats in the district will be held on May 12, between 7 am and 5 pm. Counting of votes will be taken up at 8 am on May 17, he added.
Elections will be held for a total of 3,208 seats including 1,434 seats that have been reserved for women candidates. There will be reservations for various classes like scheduled caste, scheduled tribes, backward class – A, backward class – B, with the balance going to the general category. In each of these categories, seats have been earmarked for women candidates.
Out of the 1,115 polling booths in the district, 181 have been grouped as hyper sensitive. The taluk-wise figures of the hyper sensitive booths are Mangalore (65), Bantwal (58), Beltangady (28), Puttur (15) and Sullia (15). In these taluks, the number of booths treated as sensitive are, 107 in Mangalore, 67 in Bantwal, 74 in Beltangady, 43 in Puttur and 45 in Sullia taluk.
In the meanwhile, filing of nominations in Udupi district began on Monday. On the first day, 23 nomination papers were filed.
