Bengaluru: 'Opening schools last thing on government's mind' - Minister Suresh Kumar

Bengaluru, Oct 10 (IANS): Karnataka Primary and Secondary Education Minister, S. Suresh Kumar, said on Friday stating that opening schools is the last thing on his mind as he considers himself more of a guardian of children who are studying in schools across the state.

In a lengthy message posted on his Facebook page, Kumar reassured the parents that opening schools is the last thing on his mind as of now.

"I consider myself more of a guardian of children who are studying in schools than just a minister. I completely understand the concerns of the parents," he said.

Kumar, who is under self-quarantine after testing positive for Covid-19 last week, posted the message after leaders cutting across the party lines started appealing to the state government to defer the decision to open schools until a vaccine is developed to treat coronavirus.

In his post, Kumar said, "I am equally concerned too. I have told this on a number of occasions in the past that the government is not at all in a hurry to open schools. But somehow, the issue comes to the forefront every other day."

He added that he sees himself as the guardian of more than one crore students who are studying in various schools across the state, and not just as a minister of a department.

"I assure all the parents that the state government will always stand by them, and not with any other force. The Union government may have given permission to open schools, but it is not an ultimatum," he clarified.

The minister added that the state government has never made this (opening schools) a prestige issue.

"I request those who are creating confusion to understand this. For us, the most important thing is to protect the children from this virus," he said.

Kumar further clarified that though Health and Family Welfare Minister B. Sreeramulu and Medical Education Minister K. Sudhakar had convened separate meetings to elicit opinions to resume schools, it was part of a governmental procedure to take its decision.

"Even Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa and Medical Education Minister K. Sudhakar have clarified time and again publicly that there is no plan to open schools. Such being the case, I appeal to the people not to spread misleading rumours on this issue.

"Moreover, decisions like opening schools under such circumstances cannot be taken secretly or in a hurried manner. This decision is going to affect more than a crore children. Therefore, do not spread rumours," he appealed.

Earlier on Friday, political leaders cutting across the party lines, including BJP's Shobha Karndlaje, Leader of the Opposition Siddaramaiah, JD(S) leader H.D. Kumarswamy and others, had demanded that the state government should immediately take steps to declare this academic year as 'examination less year' and promote all the students from Class I-IX without conducting any examination.

    @Anonymous,
You haven't come out of undercover still.
Now coming to your opinion & not reality when data & facts are taken into account the pandemic never qualifies to be known as that, despite vaccine, flu season causes same number of deaths or more & nobody shut down or lock downs till today!
Again you like most people have been daily fed with paid media or fake media with fake data & you air the same opinion like copy & paste always.
1 foreign scientist has challenged everybody to prove people died of corona virus & get a big bounty.
2 Indian doctors have openly challenged any scientist to prove the same & get 1 lakh each from them both.
Nobody has isolated corona virus yet, out of 1,20,000 viruses which caused the death is not proven till today.
US - CDC has clearly said only 6% of deaths were "with corona" out of 2 lakh deaths, but not proven "due to corona".
Why media is not airing it, most international media are paid by Gates to create fear & panic to sell his vaccines. When anybody expose these thing many people label it as conspiracy theory, but amazing fact is what they had predicted the same scenario in 2015 & 2017 has become truth in 2020!

This is a good decision. None of the ministers will give a contradictory statement and cause confusion. Also this decision should be conveyed to all schools and colleges through circular so that they won't cause any other problems or confusion.

We are in middle of pandemic. Saving life is more important. If we have some short term problems like extra screen time or internet issues it's fine when compared to long term health problems or loss of life. Once pandemic stops schools should be opened immediately.

So many ministers to decide upon the opening up the educational institutions ?????...here every two days shri suresh Ji, sometimes shri Ramulu and Dr Sudhakar ...why you all are confusing as if you all take care of the students in their need/sickness/pain/worries. Let our chief minister Shriman Yediyurappaji or just one minister speak on the topic and not all. It's like students in the class making intolerable noise. .Those who have internet, please help the ones who don't have internet by forwarding the study material what they get during online classes. Students /parents/neighbours please help the needy ones......Those who want to study online or offline they will study... Non availability of internet is not an excuse.

No more to comment about wisdom of our ministers, as we have voted them to power it reflects our own judgement!
A recent report from a western country-
70000 college students had been infected in the whole country, none had any symptoms,
    only 3 needed some hospitalization,
    0 deaths happened.
Didn't infect any from their family.

This reports are funny cause you just put your own logic and estimation. We alway have the 'illusionary zone of immunity ' , which is a psychological thinking that nothing will happen to us. At the start we were scared when cases and deaths were so less, and as we became used to the rising cases and deaths , we thought that nothing will happen to us . Many people had the same way of thinking and ended up getting infected or dying. One will experience true pain only when he experiences it. The pain of losing their loved ones is worse especially when they die because of someone else's carelessness. Take care , stay safe and follow all safety protocols.
