Mangaluru, Sep 15: Shakthi Education Trust observed a virtual Hindi Diwas on Monday September 14.
Sanjith Naik, the secretary of Shakthi Education Trust inaugurated the function. Sinchana of grade 8 and Chiranthana D of grade 9 spoke on the significance of the day.
Dr Saraswathi, a retired Hindi Officer of Corporation Bank, Mangaluru was the chief guest. Speaking on the occasion she said, "The study of languages is ignored by the parents as well as the students as they mainly focus on professional courses like engineering and medicine. The ethical values extracted from the story narration, poems, novels in different languages overweigh the amount that is earned from the above-mentioned profession.
English has always been defended because it is a lingua franca and because globalization demands a thorough knowledge of the language of our colonial forefathers to secure jobs. So, we now find a pathetic scramble for admissions into English medium schools. Such is the tendency to flatter and flaunt English knowledge that people tend to forget or ignore their own native language and regional language."
Dr Muralidhar Naik, retired HOD of the Hindi department of University College, Mangaluru as well as a Hindi lecturer at Shakthi PU College in his presidential address stated that despite Hindi’s official status there is still a lack of unanimity on the positives of encouraging all citizens to acquire basic skills in the language.
"Despite the bitter resistance to Hindi in some parts of the country, it continues to be the most precious symbol of Indian identity. There are studies that suggest that being multilingual may help improve multitasking, make your memory better and help improve listening and hearing skills.
"The government should take a solid step to stress the importance of communication, the advantages of multi-lingual skills and also design programmes open to all. India would soon become a hub of linguistic and cultural activity. The government has given us great hope and we can look forward to many fresh developments under the National Education Policy that would make India stand apart."
Chief advisor, Ramesh K; institute development Officer, Prakyath Rai; G-Principal of Shakthi Residential School, Vidya Kamath; coordinator of SGK Pre-school, Neema Saxena were present along with the teaching fraternity as well as the students. The winners' list of the various competitions held in connection with Hindi Diwas was announced.
Hindi teachers Ashwini Pai and Premalatha were the co-ordinators.
