Mangalore, Feb 28: Indian Catholic Youth Movement (ICYM), Kinnigoli unit organized Kinnigoli Marathon – 2010 on Sunday February 28 for a cause, Go-Green, to create awareness about greener earth, the importance of trees and plants as well as environmental protection.
Mulki Police sub-inspector Muniswami Nilakanta was the chief guest. Jacintha Almeida, ICYM Kinnigoli animator gave an introductory speech about the event. Pompie College, Aikala PD James Oliver explained the rules of the marathon to runners. Oath taking ceremony was led by Rosy Saldanha of St Mary’s School, teacher.
SI Nilakanta flagged off and gave green signal to the runners. The marathon that began from Kinnigoli Church grounds at 8.00 am, wound up at the same venue at 12.00 noon. The marathon traversed a distance of 7.5 kms passing through Kinnigoli bus-stand – Gutthakad – Damaskatte – Pompei College – MooruKaveri. Bhuvanaabhirama Udupa of Yugapurusha, Kinnigoli , Rotary president Sharath Shetty, ICYM president Joel, secretary Priya Rego, Henry Mathais, ICYM Kinnigoli animator, ICYM President Joel, Eileen D’Costa, Palana Mandali vice-president Lionel Pinto and Lions governor Alwyn Patro among others were present.
The marathon was organized in association with Rotary Club, Kinnigoli , Rotaract Club, Kinnigoli, Lions Club, Kinnigoli, Pompei College, Aikala, Pompei college NCC, NSS, M R Punja ITI, Tapovana, Tokur, Indian Catholic Youth Movement deanery, Ujwal Stree Sanghatan and Catholic Sabha, Kinnigoli.
Event concluded with prize distribution ceremony. Prizes were distributed by Fr Melwin Noronha, assistant parish priest, Kinnigoli. The first and second prize winners took home Rs 3,333 and Rs 2,222, respectively while three consolation prizes that carries Rs 555 as cash prize too was distributed.
