Mangaluru, Jul 9: There has been some reduction in the prices egg and chicken while fish prices have gone up.
After a gap of three months, price of live chicken went down by Rs 50 per kg. Live chicken are now trading at Rs 130 to 140 per kg while the processed chicken costs between Rs 200 and 220 per kg. Egg price also has come down by one rupee after a long gap.
After the advent of coronavirus infection, chicken prices had plummeted as customers were unwilling to buy it because of rumours. Later, the chicken rates raced ahead. Shortage of chicken production on account of restricted supply of chicken feed to dairy farms as shops were closed down, had fuelled the prices further. Now, as the supply of feed has resumed to full extent, the production has normalised, and price has stabilised. The chicken traders said that with the situation returning to normalcy, neither the chicken dealers nor poultry farm owners are facing any losses.
As mechanised fishing has come to a standstill in the coast, fishing with the help of country boats alone is continuing. With the increase in demand and shortfall in supply, fish prices have gone up. Mackerel was being traded in the city on Wednesday at Rs 350 to 400 per kg. However, the fact that chicken and egg prices have eased has come as a saving grace for non-vegetarians.
