Bengaluru, Jul 1: The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) council meeting which met here on Tuesday June 30, took a decision to name the Yelahanka flyover after Veer Savarkar, ignoring objections and opposition to the proposal from pro-Kannada forums and the opposition.
The decision to name the flyover at Yelahanka after Veer Savarkar had been taken at the monthly session of the corporation on February 29 this year. The corporation had invited objections on May 20, and had set June 20 as the deadline to file objections.

Even before the deadline for objections ended, the date for the inaugural of the flyover was fixed on May 28. The invitation of the corporation said that the chief minister would inaugurate the flyover. The invitation card just said that the flyover would be inaugurated, without mentioning the name, Veer Savarkar.
As the issue turned into a major controversy, the corporation said it had postponed the function due to the coronavirus situation. Opposition leader Siddaramaiah, Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee president D K Shivakumar, leader of the JD(S) legislature party Kumaraswamy, etc had expressed their strong reservation against the move. Even Kannada organizations had objected to the name and the social media was full of opinions both for and against the said move.
Leader of the ruling party in the BBMP, Muneendra Kumar, said that the corporation received a total of 111 objections out of which 106 were in favour of naming the flyover after Veera Savarkar. He said that Yelahanka MLA will fix the date for the inauguration of the flyover within a week.
