Udupi, Jun 22: It is said that presence of mind and action taken at the nick of time can save life in an accident. On Sunday June 21, when a car accidentally sank in Chowlikere lake in Barkur village, one of the travellers died on spot, but the other, a woman was saved.
Shwetha (23) who was in the car, was seriously injured. Due to timely help and first aid from the villagers, her life was saved. A significant person involved in the act was Namana, a 15- year-old girl.
As soon as they witnessed the accident, Namana and her parents rushed to the spot and saw that a car was floating in the lake upside down. They sought the help of the people around and turned the car to normal position. Shwetha was pulled out of the vehicle and Namana was instrumental in providing CPR and removing the excessive water swallowed.
Speaking to Daijiworld, Namana said, "Many accidents have taken place here in this place. But yesterday's was the first death reported till now. We rushed to the spot as soon as we heard a loud noise. We noticed that the car was upside down and with the help of the villagers we turned it and some of them jumped into the lake and brought Shwetha out of the car. We could not figure out if she was alive or not. I offered to give her CPR on spot. The methods I learned from my NCC training has helped me a lot in saving the life of Shwetha.”
Namana is currently pursuing her 10th standard at Little Rock Indian School Brahmavar. Speaking on Namana's bravery, Prof Mathew C Ninan, director, Little Rock Indian School said, "All of us at Little Rock are quite happy and proud to hear about Namana's humanitarian deed yesterday at Barkur. She is a student of class 10 at Little Rock. She studied here right through her preschool as an active, cheerful child always ready to talk to people. She continues to be confident, expressive and bold. She has exhibited her leadership qualities many times in the past. She has been an active cadet in the army wing of the NCC. She has also received training in first-aid, firing and life skills. Her training in NCC enabled her to rescue a precious life.”
The video of this noble act is now viral all over social media and Namana's work is largely applauded by the public.
Namana also insisted the authorities to install speed breakers for the road or to build a safety wall around the lake.
Shwetha is being treated in KMC hospital Manipal and is recovering.
