Bagalkot, May 9: A pregnant woman from Dhanakshiroor village in Badami taluk had to sacrifice her pregnancy to save her life from coronavirus infection. Members of her parental and in-laws families stand quarantined in Bagalkot and Gadag respectively and there were not near when this decision was taken. It is said that this is the first case of abortion in Karnataka because of coronavirus infection.
The woman had married a year back. After baby shower at her in-laws' house she had started to live with her parents at Krishnapur village in Gadag district awaiting delivery. She was invited by several relatives for lunch as is the custom where she received gifts. After she complained of fever and cold she was advised to go to Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences hospital at Hubli for check-up, where the infection was confirmed.
No member of the pregnant woman's parents and in-laws have been infected. But a few of her neighbours were suffering from this infection. It could not be concluded from whom she got it.
Director of the hospital, Ramalingappa, said that the side effects of Coronavirus are not clear. But for the hospital, saving the life of the mother was of paramount importance. He said that if the pregnancy was continued, the child would have died inside the womb or the life of the mother would have been endangered. She suffered from kidney-related complications, he stated.
