Mumbai's Arthur Road jail shocker: 77 inmates, 26 cops test positive

Mumbai, May 7 (IANS): In a big shock for the health authorities, at least 77 inmates of the Arthur Road Central Jail and 26 police personnel posted there have tested Covid-19 positive, Home Minister Anil Deshmukh said here on Thursday.

The virus has struck one barrack of the city's biggest and most well-known jail - housing more than 2,800 inmates - besides several hundred security persons manning the prison where once the 26/11, 2008 terrorist Ajmal Amir Kasab was also kept till he was hanged in November 2012.

"Recently, in one of the barracks, we found a positive case after which all the inmates and police personnel posted underwent health checks. From these, 77 inmates and 26 policemen are found Covid-19 positive," Deshmukh said.

They are all being admitted to the state-run St. George Hospital in south Mumbai, he said.

In a rare gesture, Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh visited the J.J. Marg Police Station - from where 26 personnel have tested positive this week - to boost the morale of the force stationed there.

"We have emerged victorious in so many battles, whether with the underworld or the 26/11 terror strikes... We suffered casualties but we came out winners. This time, the enemy is invisible, but we have to fight and we will come out winners again," Singh said amidst applause from the policemen.

Though the J.J. Marg Police Station is among the worst-hit, so far more than 230 cops have tested positive and 3 have lost their lives to Covid-19 so far.

This not only shocking but bad to know that 77 inmates and 26 cops were tested positive of VOVID-19. This Arthur Road is a big and crowded jail with hard core criminals are jailed. I am sure there will be more who must be victims of this coronavirus disease. We can just pray that they will not find more such cases and those infected will be cured.

For second time even Sanjubaba (Dutt) also shifted to Arthur Road Jail. He refused to stay there..as horrible sounds listening at night in cells. Latter on he shifted to Pune's Yervada Jail. Mayntara (third wife) of Sanju given much support during that time. Now she is in Dubai alongwith children unable to return.
Now questiom arises who is accompanying sanju when he his alone. In neighbourhood Pali Hill villa of Dilip Kumar-Saira Banu..wherein daily semiyaa is preparing for iftaar.

Dagdi Chawl lying nearby arthur road jail fortress of Don Arun Gawli. Gawli means cattle grazers his father and mother mahrashtrian. We Mumbaikar's, are shell shocked, by the rising graph of Covid19 pandemic, devastating, the financial capital of our nation !!! The state government is paralyzed, BMC the richest Municipal Corporation, is floundering, playing dirty politics, when dead bodies are left in wards, filled with panic stricken patients n their families.. Even the most notorious high profile Arthur road jail, has prisoners and policemen in fear of having contracted the deadly disease !!!! The future of Mumbai is uncertain, the nation will pay an astronomical, heavy price for gross failure by netas, babus, who continue to be in a denial mode... they have all put their ugly heads below the sand, hoping that this calamity will pass away !!!!

I think the covid has spread everywhere in Maharashtra, it has entered 3rd stage of community infection. Govt cannot track the sources anymore, its impossible to contain the spread. Only medicine or vaccine can save people now....

Dear Sir, when we observed lock down here in Karnataka, Mumbai was not. When we contacted our relatives/friends with regard to the trains moving.....their answer was why to lock down? What's the necessity? Ours is a main capital city in the world... Finally, when our prime minister announced compulsory lock down all the transport came to halt. Till then this infection didn't spread. Mistake happened here is..people were moving from the red zones to green zones in their private vehicles for markets/fish etc. Why the red zones areas were not sealed down? Green zone areas were open throughout the day and also till late nights. Now, infection at its peak mainly spreader through the people of red zones.... Second point, when people discharged and sent home, localities make them stand and hold prayer service/clapping for a long time. Welcome them and send them home. First only they are weak why healthy people want to create scene making them to stand and do video recording...by conducting long prayers ?? Through the power of prayer they are come back... It should be condemned...if I am wrong please pardon me....

Madam, Mumbai never sleeps. The country financial nerve center, works 24 hours, 365 days !!! The population of Mumbai along with satellite suburbs is more then 200 lakhs !!! There is an old saying, when migrants from different states arrive in this metropolis, they never leave !!! More then 50 % population live in slums... Whereas Mangaluru city is inhabited with less then 7 lakhs citizens... Majority live outside the district...most make a living abroad in foreign locations..... If Mumbai collapses then the entire nation economy will freeze !!! Bewildering, frightening scenario for India !!!

Very bad .Does one wonder how and when it happened?Just look around .All police or any responsible ones are without any mask.I am sure inside too will not be better.Needed distance is not to be seen. They tested only after one found positive. It is natural when so many inmates are there, strict follow rules .Negligence I must say. What now when too late is?
