Bengaluru, May 3: Eminent poet and Kannada writer Padma Shri K S Nissar Ahmed passed away on Sunday, May 3. He was 84.
He had been unwell and hospitalised. On Sunday, he breathed his last at his residence in Bengaluru.
Ahmed was born in Devanahalli, Mysuru on February 5, 1936. He was a post-graduate in geology and worked as an assistant geologist in the Mysore Mines and Geology at Gulbarga before becoming acquainted with the renowned poet Kuvempu.
Among his notable works are 'Nityotsava', 'Manasu Gandhi Bazaru', 'Sanje Aidara Male' and 'Manadondige Mathukathe'.
He has been the recipient of several notable awards prominently, Padma Shri (2008), Rajyostava (1981) and Pampa Award (2017). He was also awarded the Karnataka Sahitya Akademi Award for poetry in 1982 for 'Anaamika Aanglaru'.
Ahmed was the 73rd president for Kannada Sahitya Sammalenna held at Shivamogga in the year 2007. He was awarded honorary doctorate from Kuvempu University in 2010.
He served as a lecturer in geology at Central College, Bengaluru and then in Chitradurga. Later, he also taught in Sahyadri First Grade College in Shivamogga for two terms during 1967–72 and 1975–78.
Irreparable loss to Karnataka: CM
Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa described the sad demise of renowned Kannada poet and writer Prof K S Nissar Ahmed as an "irreparable loss to the Kannada literary world and the State."
In his condolence message, the Chief Minister has expressed his deep sense of sorrow and said Prof Nissar Ahmed contributed some of the best works in all genres of Kannada literature. "He has won any accolades including Padma Shri, Karnataka Sahitya Award and Pampa Award. He had special bonding with Shivamogga as he worked there for some years. He was also the President of the 73rd Kannada Sahithya Sammelana held in Shivamogga."
"May his soul rest in peace and God give the strength to his bereaved family to bear this loss," the Chief Minister said in his condolence message.
