Mangaluru/Udupi, May 1: Many parts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts received good rain on Thursday, April 30, due to the low pressure that developed in the Arabian Sea.
Beltangady, Ujire, Dharmasthala, Koyyur, Gerukatte, Karaya, Kalleri, Mittabagilu, Didupe and Uppinangady in Dakshina Kannada district received heavy rains for more than one hours in the evening on Thursday. Thunder accompanied by heavy winds were experienced in Charmadi, Neriya, Mundaje and Kanyadi. Many parts of Bantwal and Sullia also received rains.
Cloudy weather prevailed in the city of Mangaluru on the evening of Thursday. Karkala city, Hirgana, Renjala and Kukkundoor received moderate rains accompanied by thunder.
Yellow alert is declared in coastal districts on May 2 and as there is forecast of heavy rains. There is a possibility of 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm rain on these days.
Rains caused destruction in Vittal, Beltangady and Uppinangady areas. House of Channappa Naika, a resident of Kuddupadavu in Vittal got damaged when lightning struck the tree and house. All the electrical wiring and appliances of the house were reduced to ashes.
In Beltangady, electric pole uprooted and fell on the cowshed of Shailesh Kurtodi at Melantabettu village. More than 80 areca nut trees also got grounded due to the heavy wind in nearby farms.
In Uppinangady, Kalyana Mantapa of Laxmivenkataramana temple, Ganapti Math, employees’ residence of Sri Sahasralingeshwara temple, kitchen and many buildings in the vicinity got damaged.
In Puttur, the roof of the house of Monadka Suresh Shetty got damaged due to heavy winds. The cement sheets of the roof were carried away by the heavy winds. This house was built just few months ago.
