Mangaluru, Apr 29: While Covid-19 pandemic is spreading rapidly in the world, consumption of Pan Masala, Jarda, Khaini and other chewing tobacco products and spitting in public places may cause problems to people besides spreading infectious deceases such as tuberculosis, pneumonia and Covid-19 virus from one person to the other.
Harmful viruses from hands can enter human bodies while smoking beedi and cigarette and spread to the parts of the body causing sicknesses relating to lungs and heart.
Therefore, a press release by the deputy commissioner (DC) and the district tobacco control coordination committee states that in view of public welfare and Covid-19, sales and consumption of Pan Masala, Jarda, Khaini and other chewing tobacco products in the district are banned until further orders. Violations will attract registration of cases and legal action under Infectious Diseases Act 1897, Disaster Management Act 2005, IPC 188, 268, 269 and 270.
