Mangaluru: Anti-corona measures ignored by fish vendors flocking Bunder

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Apr 27: Dakshina Kannada district has earned the 'corona hotspot' tag. At a time when the coronavirus cases were on the wane, the district suddenly witnessed two deaths. Now there is a fresh allegation levelled by some people who claim that the district administration, which is expected to control the pandemic, itself is responsible for spreading the disease.

In a worrisome development that the district administration has allowed, fish trucks from other states arrive at the fisheries port here at night. Large number of people gather at the fishing port. The district administration has been permitting fish supply here since the last four days. Over 2,000 people come together at Bunder area and the crowd does not care about social distance norm. Unloading is done there and auction of fishes is held. The workers are busy with this work without wearing masks, gloves, and other safety equipment.

Over a hundred trucks from other states come here every day. The fish bought here is supplied all over the coast the next day. There is risk of coronavirus infection getting passed on to other villages from here.

In the past, fish used to be exported from the fishing port here to other states. As deep sea fishing has been banned in Karnataka now, fish is coming in from states like Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. This being Ramzan period, the district administration has given special permission to conduct fish business at night. But as no arrangements were made to maintain social distance, chances of spreading coronavirus infection is high.

It this situation is allowed to prevail, chances of coronavirus spreading to different parts of the state from here are high.

This is the heights of ignorance...........they always want their way or no way. We have seen their aggressive approach whenever there was strike or band. Due to large vote bank they always get large piece of cake with the cheery on top of it. Too add one more additional favor government waved off their loan. Thanks to our politicians.

    can't we survive without fish...

If buying stops all this will stop...

Imagine if a single person is covid-19 positive and he sneezes on the fish without mask ...if will spread like uncontrollable wildfire...all fish mongers....consumers and all those who come in contact are doomed..

This is really very sad and unfortunate situation.
The people who had gathered there, the concerned officials and elected representatives are all responsible for this mess. Is fish so important than life? Lot of other shops including wine shops are not allowed to open but here we see people not following social distancing and yet allowed to do business. Urgent necessary steps should be taken by the district authorities in order to stop the spread of Corona virus. People of DK should cooperate as this is a very serious matter. Jai Hind.

What is happening at the old port? Now they will shift the old port to some other place like the corporation shifted the wholesale market to Baikampady. Even at the old port there is no parking space and difficult to even walk. They do charge a amount while you enter.
Regarding social distancing the police and elected representatives should be stern.

They vote for them so gave them special privilege to sell their fish and import viruses. Ambulance with patients stopped near border but fish supply allowed.
Fisher communities own also written off.

It was very much expected, but still fishing was hastily permitted when absolutely no relief was given to others! The entire exercise of lockdown will become counterproductive by abrupt starting of fishing in the midst of CORONA transmission, & this can turnout to be a time bomb waiting to explode!!

Bro, they r merely speculating by extrapolating some data! Actually, the future course of CORONA conundrum will depend on multiple factors as CORONA saga in our country cannot be compared in any way to what's happening in advanced countries!
