Addicts to kick habit if liquor denied for two months: Survey

Daijiworld Media Network - Beltangady (SP)

Beltangady, Apr 25: While COVID - 19 has brought misery to most of the mankind, it could also prove to be a godsend opportunity to get rid of addiction to liquor, if the result of a survey is to be believed. Lacs of families will find a new hope in life if the liquor addicts, mostly men, get rid of drinking.

A survey conducted by Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala Rural Development Project along with Akhila Karnataka Janajagruthi Vedike has come to the conclusion that people's lives will dramatically change their course and will begin to move on path of progress if liquor is banned.

The detailed survey was undertaken under the guidance of Dharmasthala Dharmadhikari Dr D Veerendra Heggade. The survey has brought some interesting and surprising revelations. During the survey conducted by 9,400 representatives from all the districts of Karnataka about the liquor ban enforced as part of the lockdown, 60 percent of the villagers expressed the view that it has positive effects on the village life. As many as 38 percent said it has done extraordinarily well. Eighty-nine percent of the people said that non-availability of liquor in their areas has had a positive effect.

Forty-one percent of the participants of the survey said that happiness has increased in the society because of non-availability of liquor. Sixty-seven percent said that problems like skirmishes, fights or other problems did not happen on account of liquor ban. As many as 43 percent said there have been withdrawal symptoms among the addicts. Thirty percent said depression has arisen on account of liquor shortage. As many as 12 percent spoke about illegal consumption of liquor.

The survey covered a large group of people including liquor lovers and women. Dharmasthala Rural Development Project which has found that liquor sale ban has brought happiness and peace in the families and society and therefore, has been strongly advocating for banning liquor in the state.

The survey was conducted under the leadership of executive director of the project, Dr L H Manjunath. The general opinion the survey gave was that keeping the liquor away for a month has done good to the people and it has not harmed anyone. The survey also found that the society can function without liquor. The pertinent question here is why liquor ban cannot be made permanent. Dr L H Manjunath wants the government to think on these lines.

Director of Akhila Karnataka Janajagrti Vedike Vivek V Pais noted that if the situation continues as it is now for two months, 50 percent of the addicts will get rid of their addiction. He says that the government also will gain in popularity if it takes this measure.

Ban liquor of any type completely to have a healthy society.
Almost all the families, households including wives, children & neighbours are living peacefully from past one month. Government has to consider this report very seriously & ban liquor forever. Revene is not above human beings, cut down the allocated budgets to various departments drastically to compensate the excise revenue. Also terminate this Excise department.
Let us start new life with NO Corona & NO Liquor.

First of all, those who really want to drink will find a way. Just as one reader pointed out, it is available in Saudi, even though the punishment if they get caught is horrible. Gujarat the so called dry state has it in black. And if the government firces permanent ban on alchohol, crime rate will increase and loss if kives wilk sky rocket because many spurious liquor manufacturing units will pop up and many will die of poisoning. Instead, the government should come out with much better understanding, counseling and treatment process. The issue is that we nake more of emotional decisions than practical decisions. In India it is much necessary to do a detailed study on alcoholism. For that a much needed resolve is the need of the hour. Forcing an alcoholic to stop drinking is just a temporary solution.

It is definitely bgood for addicts to kick the habit. It does require a better system of progressive treatment.
The banning of alcohol is never the anserr. Prohibition era should make that clear. Banning anything only makes it more desireabley. And gives rise to illicit unregulated liquor. (Look at gujarat, the dry state of India) bootlegger make a killing. Any product or service, banning it only makes it a forbidden fruit, regulations of who can sell, where can it be sold what are taxes imposed are maybe some methods. So let's not tall bout banning of alcohol as if it is something they can just announce and the country will just stop drinking .
The current time is not under normal conditions and the behaviour observed during these times cannot be attributed to everyday conditions.

Majority of people indulge in drinking, but only a few get addicted because of genetic predisposition or other factors! Has one not heard of, alcoholic, expert surgeons who wouldn't operate without taking a shot or two to rid of hand tremor!!
It's a myth to say that an alcoholic who is forcibly put away from it will become sober! In fact, the addict will do it all the more when shops open! I have known addicts imprisoned in toughest of rehabs for more than a year restarting again as soon as they r out!

Unless the addict himself decides, nobody can help him!

BTW, addicts r mostly found at two ends of the spectrum, very rich or very poor for obvious reasons!

Banning will also give rise to another different set of problems which need not be elucidated!

BTW, see how our bureaucrats r enjoying high end booze; having audacity to transport the same in CORONA designated govt vehicles!!
    Jai Bharat!!

This is dangerous news for the Govt. If addicts kick the habit of liquor, it will affect the revenue of the Govt to a huge extent. In a way it is a good sign for people to give up the habit but bad for Govt. But in short, drinkers or drunkards will give up Holy Spirit but definitely they will not give Hi-spirit.

A timely survey with most relevant findings! SKDRDP has played key roles in prohibition movements and deaddiction camps, and their contributions are pricrless. However, the need of the hour is to prevent atleast some of them from rushing to liquor shops as soon as they are opened!

People with physical dependence on Alcohol should not be made to withdraw completely at once... It will lead to Delirium tremens which could be life threatening.... People who need it will find it... Just like they have in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia... Where the good stuff is banned but illegally available. Detox guidelines for alcohol involves benzodiazepines and Slow titrating of intake

The Lockdown, especially for Alcoholic/Drug addicts, have come as a blessing in disguise !!! The Withdrawal syndrome is intense, many become violent, abusive, hallucinations and pangs for the substance can even drive an addict to suicide, especially when the human body is denied alcohol/drugs...Once this period subsides then it is reasonably assured, that the addict, will be on the path to recovery... free from addiction !!!!

Survey is conducted by non drinkers and it doesn't have drinkers opinion. Most of the government income generated from EXCISE TAXES and our Politicians and Bureaucrats/policemen earn CRORES of rupees from tax evasion and commission so they don't allow it to happen at any cost. Politicians/government servants live lavish life and earn wealth through liquor related business incomes.

This survey appears to be counter to what is taught in most medical, nursing, social and psychological schools and establishments around the world. It is generally accepted that alcoholism is an illness or disease. Is it true that forced societal denial of alcohol to alcoholics will make them happy?
