Mangalore, Dec 12: “‘Paddhana Poomale’ is an MP3 CD collection of Tulu folk songs, aimed at taking the research work of veteran Tulu scholars to all Tulu natives”, said journalist Shekar Ajekar.
He was addressing media persons during the release of ‘Paddhana Poomale’, held at the Press Club, recently.
Ajekar congratulated Ramakrishna Shetty of ‘Akshay Music’, Moodbidri, for producing the CD to promote Tulu.
Veteran researcher and Tulu dictionary editor Dr U P Upadyaya presided over the programme.
Researcher Susheela P Upadyaya was the chief guest on the occasion. Radhakrishna Shetty welcomed the gathering and proposed the vote of thanks.
The folk songs were compiled after four decades of research by Dr Susheela Upadyaya, and retain the original melodies and rhythms. Girija Rao assisted in the singing.
Gururaj Marpalli assisted on ‘mrudangam’. Dr Upadyaya authored the story behind the folk songs in Kannada.
The CD has folk songs about the legendary Tulunadu icons Koti–Chennaya, ‘Tulunada Siri’, ‘Naga Siri’, ‘Kordabbu’, ‘Parati Mangane’, ‘Aati Kalanja’, ‘Pili Panji’, ‘Balindra Paddhana’, and folk dance of Mahakali. H B L Rao is the co-sponsor.
Traditional folk dances, wedding songs, and devotional songs, convey the richness of Tulunadu culture.
