Mangaluru: Vegetable, fruit vendors shift businesses to APMC Yard

Mangaluru, Apr 8: At long last, traders who were conducting their vegetables and fruits business at the dilapidated central market building, who were unwilling to shift elsewhere as the central market is located in the heart of the city, buckled under pressure and shifted their businesses to Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) yard at Bykampady here, where facilities have largely remained under-utilized because of the unwillingness of traders to shift operations there.

The central market building used to present a picture of utter chaos as people struggled to get in and out of the narrow paths among heaps of vegetables and other things. The authorities could not enforce social distancing there to regulate the spread of coronavirus because of the faulty design of the building and the central market did not support good escape routes in case of fire and other tragedies.

Now that the market has been shifted to Bykampady from Wednesday to a spacious and organized set up, one hopes that facilities will be provided to people and the buyers towards getting a pleasant experience in a spacious market even though distance factor does discourage people from going that far for small purchases.

The city corporation plans to demolish the central market building and build a modern one that conforms to safety norms, in its place.

It is wrong decision moving market from central market to baikampady. They say central market is a very old. I believe even kullor bridge is too old . After taking the central market where will the retailer go for their income. It is wrong decision by the government

Kindly provide good facilities at APMC Yard. Now the way vendors are keeping Vegetable on open ground totally is unhygienic. At the time COVID-19 we have to wash our hands every often and we have to buy these items with this conditions!!!. If you have shifted the Main Central Market to Bykampadi which is outskirts of Mangalore City and it is not easy for regular people to come up buy Veggies there unless you are a retailer or owning shop. Kindly construct mini Vegetable, Fish, Meat other Market at each central area so that regular people can go and buy their daily essentials. It is better to have some constructive way to expand our city.

Suppose if there is any problem, that is for retail vegetables seller. And not for vegetables buyers, because in every area in Mangalore there are vegetable market and also other small vegetables shops. The shop keepers must make arrangements to keep stock of fresh vegetables. His duty is to get from yard. Why consumers must worry and go to yard . Yard dealers must sell wholesale only.

Well, I may be odd to oppose this move. It was convenient to me to purchase vegetables and fruits on weekly basis when it was in Central. market. I would have welcomed this move, if no. Of HOPCOM outlets were opened at every 1 km distance in the city limit. Now that we may not have access to central market these retailers can make merry of this situation. Also think of those retailers who were making their life in the same locality. Also since it was in the heart of the city earlier, it was an easyaccess to anybody from any part of the city with good connectivity by city busses. I hope to get back the CM back to it's original place.

New developments are only possible when BJP in power. We can realize this as soon as the corporation has been taken over by BJP govt. a lot of developmental activities are started. Not just money looting developments.

    Swath,
After looking at the pictures of the APMC yard today,
You have judged the degree of development. If this is
Your assessment of development, I understand your
Class. Wait till monsoon sets in. The yard will be suitable
    For Kona Kambala.
Yes vegetables are grown from soil, and you suggest we eat
    both? Or make Soil Sambhar.

If the photos published are of new APMC market yard, than it requires more improvement. With rains due in next 3 months without proper concreting or even tar cover the area would look like a muddy swamp. Pkease ensure proper roads and parking spaces are providing with concrete or Tar covering the vacant places to ensure no water logging happen in rainy season

Whole seller must supply vegetables and other essential items from shop to shop to their customers early morning before 7am. They should avoid retail sellers comming upto APMC yard daily. Like Tender Coconut ,the whole seller supplying to all vendors where they have the counter.

The old building is a valuable heritage place to Mangalore.Instead demolishing the whole building,it can be repaired and improved in its original look. These old buildings are cultural heritage of the city. They can be improved in their old look. They old memories and are extremely valuble monuments of the past.Even I disliked the cutting of big big trees in the name of development.Instead they should be rearranged in such a way that they add to the beauty.Addition and correction is always better than demolishment.
